Arrival and Orientation

On Saturday, around 1,000 of Missouri's brightest high school students from 400 high schools across Missouri arrived on the campus of the University of Central Missouri to attend the American Legion Boys State of Missouri. After completing the registration process, the citizens returned to their cities to meet their fellow citizens and counselors with whom they would spend the majority of their time with as they build their city, county, and state governments.

Realizing the fast-pace of Missouri Boys State, the citizens attended the opening ceremonies where they were welcomed by the leaders of the program.

The keynote speaker for the 74th session on Saturday evening was former Missouri Governor Bob Holden who would deliver an address detailing his involvement in bringing the 15 Chinese students to Missouri to have the opportunity to participate in Missouri Boys State. This groundbreaking international component to the Missouri Boys State and programs is called the US-China Youth Leadership Exchange and is being led by the MidWest US-China Association. Governor Holden stressed the importance of relationships, not only with the citizens from China, but with every one they meet in their lives.  Relationships allow us to build connections with our partners.

Holden said, "This is the time for us to reach across the aisle and welcome each other to a new world. The world is a global economy and a constant competition. Do not go where the path may lead, go where there is no path and leave a trail. Build a new path and seize it."

After the assembly the citizens returned to their cities to determine various non-governmental offices and establish ward and city political platforms. Following the organization of the political party platforms the citizens would gather for one final city meeting before lights out.

As the first day wrapped up plans for the coming week raced through their minds as they prepared for bed only imagining the events and experiences to come that would undoubtedly be "A Week to Shape a Lifetime."
