"My outlook on life and society has changed due to this miraculous experience. My term in the MBS House of Representatives, along with the Keynote Speakers throughout the week, taught me what it meant to be a man in today's society. The responsibility MBS instilled in our day-to-day lives gave us a sense of pride, which remains in my life today."

Answers

What if I have to take the ACT on Saturday?

Every couple of years the beginning of the session coincides with the ACT testing day.  Many students take the ACT at their high school and have plenty of time to arrive at Boys State during the registration period.  Students who live 4 or more hours from Warrensburg should consider signing up to take the ACT at a test site near or in Warrensburg to ensure they arrive at Boys State in plenty of time.

Contact Missouri Boys State Headquarters for more information.

How many students attend Missouri Boys State?

You will be one of nearly 550 students high schools (large, small, rural, suburban, urban) across Missouri participate in Missouri Boys State.  Not a large number when you think about how many juniors there are in the entire state of Missouri.

How long does the program last?

Missouri Boys State lasts 8 days (Saturday to Saturday).  Registration begins at 12:00 p.m. on the first Saturday and continues throughout the week until the following Saturday.  The session concludes after the awards ceremony on the last Saturday, usually around 10:30 a.m.

What scholarship opportunities are available to me?

Each year Missouri Boys State awards a scholarship to the Citizen of the Week.  The recipient receives at $20,000 scholarship ($5,000 each year, renewable for four years) to apply toward tuition to a college or university of his choice. The yearly renewal of the scholarship is based on grade point average, continued service on the Missouri Boys State counseling staff, and other criteria.  In addition, one-time scholarships are awarded to the first alternate ($5,000), second alternate ($2,500), and five other recipients ($1,000) to apply toward tuition at the institutions of learning selected by the recipients.

The Harley Wyatt Memorial Scholarship program includes 30 colleges and universitys providing over $2,000,000 in scholarships to Boys State citizens.  Application criteria and deadlines are included in the Harley Wyatt Memorial Scholarship brochure provided to you in the packet distributed at the orientation prior to the program.

American Legion Scholarships are available on their website.

Applications for the Samsung/American Legion Scholarship may be completed by students who are direct descendants (i.e., son, grandson, great-grandson) of a man or woman who served on active duty in the U.S. military for one of the periods of war indicated on the application. Applications are due no later than 11:59 p.m. the first day of the program. One winner will be selected at the state-level to compete for ten $10,000 and ten $5,000 national-level scholarships.

Eligibility for all scholarships includes attending and successfully completing the Missouri Boys State program.

A comprehensive list is available on this website.

Who are the staff members?

The administrative staff, counseling staff, and athletic supervisors who are in charge of the individual phases of the program are trained leaders and experienced youth counselors who donate a week of their time as public service.

Each member of the staff is giving back to the program's participants the same excitement, inspiration and value, the Boys State program gave them when they were citizens. Our volunteers work hard each year to provide the citizens of Missouri Boys State the best experience possible.

Who is my sponsor?

Sponsors can be an American Legion Post, business, civic organization/group, or an individual (not related to the citizen).

You will be provided the name and contact information for your sponsor(s) at the end of the week.  We'll encourage you to write a thank you note to your sponsor(s) and will even mail them for you!

Once you've completed the program, please consider contacting your sponsor(s) to tell them about your Boys State experience and perhaps even offering to make a short presentation.  Sponsors really enjoy hearing from you and appreciate a thank you.

Without sponsors, students wouldn't have the opportunity to participate.  So your participation is the result of their generosity.

The per student program fee is $500 (plus an additional amount where transportation is provided).  If you know a business, civic organization/group, or individual interested in sponsoring a Boys State citizen, please contact the Missouri Boys State Headquarters.
