U.S. SENATE CANDIDATES TO ADDRESS STUDENTS ON FATHER'S
DAY
(JEFFERSON CITY) -- The two men expected to battle
for the a U.S. Senate seat in November, Senator John Ashcroft and
Governor Mel Carnahan, will talk about the issues with students
participating in the Missouri Boys State program on June 18 in Hendricks
Hall at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg. Each will
speak and take questions from the students separately during the
evening program. Governor Carnahan will lead off the program with
his remarks beginning at 6:45 p.m. Following his remarks, Carnahan
will hold a question and answer session with the students in attendance.
Senator Ashcroft will conclude the program with his remarks beginning
at approximately 8:00 p.m. Ashcroft will also hold a question and
answer session following his remarks.
Nearly 1,000 Boys State participants will be the first to talk issues
with the candidates on the same night in the same place since both
men announced their intent to seek the Senate seat currently held
by Ashcroft. Both men have been great supporters of the Missouri
Boys State program over the years. Each have appeared at the leadership
program more than a dozen times while serving as elected officials.
In addition to the Senate candidates, the Boys State participants
will hear from a number of Missouri officials during the course
of the week long program including: U.S. Representative Ike Skelton
(D-Mo), Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon, State Treasurer Bob
Holden, Secretary of State Bekki Cook and NBC News Political Analyst
Lisa Myers, who will serve as the 12th Annual George Lehr Speakers
Chair.
Missouri Boys State is a citizenship and leadership
training program held annually at Central Missouri State University
and sponsored by the Missouri American Legion. This year's program
will be held from June 17 - 24 and marks the 61st session of the
Missouri Boys State.
