TRAVIS ELECTED GOVERNOR OF 68th SESSION OF MISSOURI BOYS STATE
WARRENSBURG, MO -- Joshua Thomas Travis of Manchester was elected Governor of the 68th session of The American Legion Boys State of Missouri held on the campus of University of Central Missouri last week. Travis, the Nationalist Party nominee defeated Benjamin M. Gomez of Pacific in a landslide to win the statewide election held on Thursday. Travis who attends Parkway South High School in St. Louis captured 74% of the vote in his victory. Gomez, who attends Pacific High School, was the Federalist Party nominee and received 24% of the vote in a very spirited election. Travis was sponsored by American Legion Post 208 in Manchester and Gomez was sponsored by the Private George Phillips Detachment #1214 of the Marine Corps League in Ballwin.
In his inaugural address on Thursday evening, Travis thanked the many individuals who helped him in his campaign and the members of the Missouri American Legion who sponsored the 68th session of the Boys State program and immediately began to lay out his agenda for his one-year term as Governor.
His remarks to the participants of Missouri Boys State followed the remarks of the outgoing Governor Ryan Scenciboy of St. Louis (Lafayette HS). U.S. Court of Appeals Judge Duane Benton administered the oath of office to Governor Travis and the newly elected state officials during the joint session of the Missouri Boys State House of Representatives and Senate. Governor Matt Blunt delivered a keynote address prior to the joint session. During his remarks, he challenged Boys State participants to get involved in public service in their schools and communities.
Other students elected to statewide office were:
Lt. Governor, Kale Gosney of Joplin;Secretary of State, Christopher Doak of Corder; State Auditor, Kyle Ogle of Webb City; State Treasurer, Kaaron Carter of Warrensburg; Attorney General, Keith Kennedy of Barnhart and Jacobe Britt of Joplin was elected Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. The following individuals were elected as regular members of the Boys State Supreme Court:
Jacob Heppner, Mountain Grove
Michael Hoffman, Weston
Nathaniel Hayward, Dellwood
Alan Liu, Joplin
Evan Hellmuth, Kansas City
McKay Coffey, St. Charles
Only young men who distinguish themselves as leaders in their high schools and communities are selected to attend the Missouri Boys State program. Missouri Boys State is a citizenship and leadership training program sponsored by the Missouri American Legion. Boys State was held during the week of June 16 - 23, 2007 on the campus of University of Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, MO.
