William Phillip SeigfreidJEFFERSON CITY, MO -- William Phillip Seigfreid of Mexico, MO is a little more at ease about paying for his college education these days.  Seigfreid was one of ten students nationwide awarded the 2007 Samsung-American Legion Scholarship in Indianapolis on Wednesday.  Each Samsung Scholar receives a $20,000 scholarship to be applied toward their college education at the school of their choice.  The ten students emerged from a list of nearly 100 finalists nationwide.  The American Legion National Committee on Education with participation from the Samsung Corporation selected the recipients based on their academic record, involvement in school and community activities and financial need.  Eligibility for scholarships requires students to be direct descendants of U.S. wartime veterans.  Seigfreid was eligible for the scholarship by virtue of his participation in The American Legion Boys State of Missouri held in Warrensburg this past June and by his grandfather’s service during the Korean War.  Seigfreid was selected as the Missouri Boys State Samsung finalist from among more than 250 applicants.  Missouri Boys State is a leadership and citizenship training program sponsored by the Missouri American Legion.

Seigfreid is currently a senior at Mexico High School in Mexico, MO and he is the son of Paul and Mary Seigfreid.  His participation at Missouri Boys State was made possible through sponsorship from the Mexico Kiwanis Club.  He was elected and served as a member of the Missouri Boys State House of Representatives during the 2007 session.

The Samsung Group, an international electronics company, endowed a scholarship fund of $5 million to be administered by The American Legion, to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War.  The size and number of scholarships awarded each year is dependent upon the amount of income derived from the fund each year.  The full list of 2007 winners:
