Answers

How will my donation to Missouri Boys State be used each year?

Your donation will be used to pay all or a portion of the $500 per student program fee.  The program fee includes:  all educational materials, room and food for 8 days, and providing access to the benefits of participation (i.e., scholarships, college credit, speakers, mentors).

In areas where transportation is provided to and from the program, most sponsors elect to donate an additional amount up to $100 to cover these expenses.

If the Missouri Boys State program is sponsored by the American Legion, why do you need additional sponsors?

Fewer than 33% of Boys State participants are currently sponsored by The American Legion Posts.  This is due to the decline in the number of Posts and members across Missouri.  Therefore, requesting financial support from other organizations, clubs, businesses, and individuals to sponsor students is essential.

How will I know my donation is making a difference?

Your support is greatly appreciated!  Your donation provides one or more students the opportunity to participate in Missouri Boys State.

Each year, we hear back from students who share how Boys State impacted them.  Your donation is making a difference!  Here's just a few examples:

"Boys was one of the greatest, most life changing experiences of my life.  I learned about how the Missouri government worked, and I gained more respect for all the people who work in Missouri politics.  Not only did I learn about politics but I learned a lot about myself."

"Through this extraordinary program I have grown in leadership, character, and confidence.  I met various young men from different backgrounds and they have taught me that it's ok to be different and excel to your highest level."

"My experience completely turned my life around and I can't thank you enough for what you have given me!  I feel that I could never pay back the debt I feel I owe the program."

Hopefully, you have heard similar comments from the students you've sponsored.  We provide the students and their parents with the contact information for their sponsors (unless the donation is requested to be anonymous) and encourage them to contact their sponsors to express their gratitude for the generosity.  Some students even offer to make a short presentation to their sponsoring organization.  They are eager to share what they learned at the program and to thank the sponsor for their support.

Following the program, we'll send you a letter and a Certificate of Appreciation recognizing your donation.  You'll also be mailed a copy of our annual yearbook, A Week to Shape a Lifetime, which includes highlights from the program and lists all of our sponsors.  In addition, we honor our sponsors by listing them on our website.

How will my support be recognized?

A complete list of sponsors will be included in our annual yearbook, A Week to Shape a Lifetime. Following the program, the yearbook is sent to all Missouri Boys State citizens, high school counselors and principals, sponsors, speakers, and elected officials.

Sponsors also receive recognition on our website.

  • Nominated by his high school through the established guidelines.

How are students selected for participation in Missouri Boys State?

Each student is nominated by his high school based on his excellence in leadership, citizenship, scholarship, and character.  Many times, service to his school and community are also considered.  Ideally, each high school creates a nominating committee consisting of administrators, counselors, teachers, and former Boys State citizens. The committee reviews and considers the students who meet the eligibility criteria. Once identified as a nominee, the student completes an online. The high school submits a list of nominees that has been approved and endorsed by the principal/designated administrator to the local American Legion Post representative or District Chair. The District Chair makes the final selection and submits those applications and alternates to the Missouri Boys State Headquarters for processing.

May I designate the student I want to sponsor?

While undesignated donations allow flexibility to sponsor students in all areas of the state, you may designate the student only if the student has already been nominated by his high school through the established process.  You may also designate a school or a school within a county for use of your sponsorship.  Every effort will be made to ensure your donation is applied according to your request.  Please contact the Missouri Boys State Headquarters to coordinate the use of your sponsorship.

What are some of the benefits of attending Missouri Boys State?

The Missouri Boys State program provides young men with a broad understanding of the privileges and responsibilities of citizenship and better understanding of and appreciation for self-government. It is expected that each citizen will take the ideas and knowledge he has gained and put them to use in his own high school and community.

During Boys State week, citizens participate in a wide variety of educational and recreational activities and hear inspirational talks from and ask questions of both state and national leaders.

Participants become eligible for scholarships and university credit.

Does my sponsorship stop at the end of the week?

Your sponsorship dollars continue to work for the participant long after the end of the week. Because you chose to sponsor a student, through his full participation in and successful completion of the MBS program, he becomes eligible for over $2,000,000 in college scholarships from approximately 30 colleges and universities; the Citizen of the Week Scholarship at $20,000; several American Legion Scholarships totaling $3,750; and the Samsung/American Legion Scholarship (multiple national-level scholarships valued at $10,000 and $5,000 each). Each citizen who successfully completes the program is also eligible for 2 or 3 hours of college credit from UCM. Further, two citizens are chosen to attend Boys Nation held in Washington D.C. during July. Citizens often list attendance at MBS and obtain letters of recommendation from MBS staff when applying to military academies. In addition, many citizens return the following years to serve on the MBS as counselors or instructors.

How are Missouri Boys State citizens supervised while on the UCM campus?

The administrative staff, counseling staff, and athletic supervisors in charge of the individual phases of the program are trained leaders and experienced youth counselors donating a week of their time as a public service. Almost all volunteer staff members are former Boys State citizens. Each year over 17,000 hours of volunteer service go into operating the program. Each day’s activities begin early and end late. Dorms are fully supervised at night by volunteer staff. Missouri Boys State citizens must arrive to the program on time and remain on campus for the complete duration of the session. There are NO exceptions to this policy. The Missouri Boys State Board of Directors reserves the right to dismiss any citizen for violation of the rules while the program is in session.
