Heading off to an eight-day program might seem a little daunting when you start to pack your belongings. We've developed this list to assist you in making sure you have everything you need to be successful at Missouri Boys State. There are also several items you should leave at home.
First off, there are some very important forms and documents you were given at one of our Orientation Meetings.
Your citizenship handbook is one of the most important tools you will use throughout your week at Missouri Boys State. The handbook contains most everything you need to know including a detailed description of Missouri Boys State, an explination of anything you need to know, from a detailed description of Missouri Boys State, an explanation of the levels of government, election processes, historical information and much more. There is also a detailed description of each of the schools of instruction, the materials to be covered during Boys State, and the jobs and activities in each school.
Prior to your arrival at Missouri Boys State, we highly recommend you read Chapters 1-2, 4-5. However, the more you read, the better you will understand the information being presented during your first city meeting at MBS. You'll also be ahead of the game!
As a Missouri Boys State citizen, you will be tested on the information disseminated during your selected School of Instruction. A passing grade is part of the qualifications for College Credit eligibility from the University of Central Missouri.
The schedule of activities during Missouri Boys State is seemingly non-stop -- everything you will be doing while at MBS is listed in this schedule, and as you can see, there's very little down time. Please take some time to review, at least, the first couple days.
This tight schedule may seem a little overwhelming at first, but rest assured it's not as crazy as you might think. You will, for the most part, be moving around the program with your fellow citizens, City Counselors and Assistant City Counselors assigned to your MBS City.
Medical and Citizen Authorization and Academic Policy Forms
It is also very important that you list any allergies, injuries, operations, serious illnesses, heart conditions, vision problems, hearing loss, or any other important health information in addition to any medications you are currently taking. You should contact the MBS Headquarters prior to the program to discuss and/or arrange for any special accommodations which may be needed (i.e., mobility, dietary, medical, testing).
In the event of an emergency, you will be treated at the Western Missouri Medical Center in Warrensburg, MO.
The Academic Policy form is required by the University of Central Missouri, our host. It also includes an image release for Missouri Boys State to use your image/likeness in publications, our website, and/or other promotional materials.
No MBS Citizen will be admitted without these completed and signed forms.
We highly recommend you bring following:
- 3-Ring Binder
- Notebook paper
- #2 Pencil
For taking your test and other surveys during the week
Clothes & Toiletries
Summers in Warrensburg, MO can be very hot and humid. We recommend you bring clothes that are comfortable. The dorms and classrooms are air conditioned, however you will be spending time outside for various activities during the week.
Here's a list to get you started:
clothes to last 8 days as no laundry facilities are available.
- Coat & Tie
If you are considering running for an elected office (recommended but not required).
- Comfortable Shoes
You will be walking to reach activities and events during the week.
- Personal Hygiene Supplies
soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, antiperspirant/deodorant, shaving kit, hand sanitizer, etc.
- Towels &
We recommend two towels to get you through the week.
- Gym Clothes & Equipment
Each day of the week, you will be participating in a variety of athletic events. These may include badminton, track and field, softball, and basketball. Make sure you bring tennis shoes and gym clothes. If you have a baseball glove feel free to bring it. Other equipment is NOT necessary – we’ll provide items required for these activities.
- Sheets, Pillow and Blanket (UPDATED: 5/24/2021 due to COVID-19)
Bring sheets and blanket (the a/c can be very cold at night) for twin XL bed (twin XL or larger sheets will work) OR a sleeping bag. Bring a pillow and pillowcase too.
- Face Masks
Masks are to be worn by every person at Boys State regardless of age or whether vaccinated, where required. Masks must always cover both nose and mouth unless actively eating or drinking.
We recommend at least 8 (enough for each day of Boys State) plus some extras.
For more information, please see our COVID-19 Protocols page.
Missouri Boys State provides bedding materials (sheets, pillow, and blanket). However, if you wish to bring your own, you are welcome to do so.
Each morning Boys State wakes up to a rousing round of "Reveille" and closes the day with "Taps". If you play the trumpet, or similar instrument, please feel free to bring it. There will be auditions the first evening of Boys State (Required Music)
In previous years, citizens have played the trumpet, saxophone, guitar, trombone, snare drum, and French horn. We recommend you don’t bring an overly large instrument. Missouri Boys State is not responsible for valuables, but we will give you the opportunity to store these instruments in a secure location.
While you are welcome to bring any amount, we have found that between $50-$75 is all that you really need to get a missed essential, a snack or the latest in Boys State sportswear. Our Boys State Store does accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover credit and debit cards.
At the Boys State Store you can purchase soda, candy, t-shirts, and other apparel items. We ask that each citizen purchase one (1) MBS t-shirt (around $15/each).
If there is an item you fail to bring, such as soap, deodorant, toothpaste, a limited supply of these items will be available in the MBS Store.
Cell Phone Policy
We understand in our interconnected society that your parents may need to contact you while attending Missouri Boys State. Therefore, we will allow you to bring your cell phone with you. However, we ask you be respectful with its usage. There will be designated periods of time and locations that you may use your cell phone. Social calls, surfing the internet and/or texting are discouraged during Boys State.
If your parents need to get in touch with you regarding an emergency, please have them contact the MBS Headquarters.
