David Axelrod

David Axelrod will accept the 26th Annual George W. Lehr Memorial Speaker’s Chair on Saturday night at Hendricks Hall.  Axelrod has served as senior advisor to President Barack Obama, and during the Obama-Biden Presidential Transition, and senior strategist during Obama’s 2008 and 2012 presidential campaigns.  Today he serves as the director, Institute of Politics at the University of Chicago and is a political analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. 

From 1988 to 2008, Axelrod was the founder and􀋢senior partner at the consulting firm AKPD Message and Media, based in Chicago. In that capacity, he managed media strategy and communications for more than 150 local, state and national campaigns, with a focus on progressive candidates and causes.

Before entering politics in 1984, Axelrod spent eight years as a reporter for The Chicago Tribune, where he covered national, state and local politics. In 1981, he became the youngest political writer and columnist in the paper's history. He also served as the Tribune's City Hall bureau chief. Active in charitable work in Chicago, Axelrod has supported Special Olympics and Misericordia. In 1998, he and his wife, Susan, helped found Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), which has raised over $26 million so far for scientists searching for a cure.

Axelrod was born in New York City, and graduated from Stuyvesant High School and the University of Chicago. He served as an Adjunct Professor of Communication Studies at Northwestern University and has lectured on political media at Harvard University, the University of Chicago and the University of Pennsylvania.

Kansas City Mayor Sly James

Kansas City Mayor Sly James will deliver a keynote address at a special assembly on Sunday evening in Hendricks Hall. This is Mayor James' third visit to the Boys State program and he will provide a candid and entertaining discussion of the issues facing elected officials at the city level. We are very pleased to have him as part of the program again this year. The Mayor will hold a question and answer session following his prepared remarks. Sly attended Bishop Hogan High School in Kansas City, graduating in 1969. While there, Sly was the president of his junior class. During his 26-year legal career, Sly developed a proven record of success as a leader, an effective coalition builder, and a fierce advocate. He joined Blackwell, Sanders, Matheny, Weary & Lombardi in 1983, and became the first African-American partner in the firmís history in 1990.

Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander will deliver a keynote address on Monday evening. Jason Kander, was sworn in as Missouri's 39th Secretary of State in January 2013. A former U.S. Army Captain, Jason is a veteran of the war in Afghanistan. Prior to his election as Secretary of State, he practiced law, represented Kansas City in the Missouri General Assembly, and served on the Missouri Veterans Commission. He is a graduate of American University and Georgetown Law School and is married to his high school sweetheart, Diana.

Lt. Gen. Milstead was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, USMC, in March 1975 and was trained as a Naval Aviator flying the AH-1 Cobra helicopter. Lt. Gen. Milstead has served in multiple command positions including the HMLA-169 Vipers, Marine Aircraft Group 29 War Eagles, 2d Marine Aircraft Wing, Marine Corps Recruiting Command, and now serves as the Deputy Commandant, Manpower and Reserve Affairs, Quantico, VA. Lt. Gen. Milstead has deployed to Turkey, Northern Iraq, in Operation Provide Comfort, Somalia for Operation Restore Hope, Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Following his prepared remarks, Lt. Gen Milstead will hold a question and answer session with the Citizens.

Senator Roy Blunt

Senator Roy Blunt came to the United States House of Representatives in 1997 with a background as a public servant, university president and administrator. He became the Majority Whip earlier in his career than any Member of Congress in the last eight decades and also served as Majority Leader. He now serves as a Missouri senator. Following his prepared remarks, Senator Blunt will hold a question and answer session.

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon will deliver a keynote address at a special assembly on Thursday evening in
Hendricks Hall. Govenor Nixon has been an outstanding supporter of the Boys State program throughout
his years as Missouri's Attorney General and Governor. We are very pleased to have him back to Boys
State. The Governor will hold a question and answer session following his prepared remarks.

Eric Greitens

White House Fellow, Navy Seal Commander and Rhodes Scholar Eric Greitens will speak to MBS participants on Friday at Hendricks Hall. One of the most accomplished Boys Staters in recent memory, Greitens will share his extraordinary career with Boys Staters in a special assembly. Greitens returned from his last tour of duty in Iraq in 2007. As an award-winning humanitarian leader, Eric has traveled to many war and crisis torn countries to reveal not only the hardship of the people, but also their strength and compassion. Following his prepared remarks he will hold a question and answer session.




Saturday, June 21, 2014 (8:00-10:30 AM)

All phases of Boys State government will be functioning for parents, teachers and other visitors. The announcement of the winners of various competitions and awards presentations immediately follow Democracy in Action.
