Saturday is a day of firsts at Missouri Boys State -- first introductions, first city meeting, and the first day of a "week to shape a lifetime." City party structure begins taking shape, and the slate of candidates is submitted for the city election held on Sunday morning!
CITIZENS ARRIVE!
Over 800 young men arrived on campus - by car or by the Boys State bus system - to be greeted by over 100 volunteer staff members. Citizens were informed of their cities that they'll call home this week. It was a little warm, but the process was quick, and citizens swiftly headed off to their cities to complete their registration. Before the first city meeting, many citizens unpacked and started to get to know their new neighbors. This will be the beginning of many lifelong friendships. Boys State is underway!
FIRST CITY MEETING
Cities assembled Saturday afternoon for the first time as one unit. They got a chance to introduce themselves and get to know their city counseling staff. Ground rules were established, and more importantly, citizens had the first opportunity to "run" for a position: the esteemed Beverige Commissioner. Only one citizen per city can hold this hallowed office of managing soda sales and distribution to thirsty citizens. More positions follow quickly!
BOYS STATE IS IN SESSION!
After a great meal at the dining hall, citizens headed to the Scheidegger Center for the first assembly of the week. Director Brad Lear, Lindenwood University President Dr. John Porter, Missouri Governor John Holt, Dean of Operations Jerod Breit, and Dean of Counselors Nick Ebert all shared warm and welcoming remarks to an enthusiastic crowd! With a big moment, a big gavel is required to open up such a momentous week.
POWERFUL KEYNOTE
The citizens of Missouri Boys State kicked off their week with an inspiring keynote address from Mr. Anthony Robles. Robles captivated the audience with his compelling narrative of perseverance, commitment and athletic prowess. He recounted his journey from starting wrestling at 14, overcoming his disability, and eventually wrestling for Arizona State University. Throughout his speech, Robles shared his battles with illness and anxiety, all while striving to be a supportive big brother. Robles addressed a wide range of topics, including the challenges of being a student-athlete, the importance of identifying personal strengths, giving back to the community and even his experience as his own stunt double in a movie based on his life. It was a memorable evening and a fantastic beginning to the week at Missouri Boys State.
MBS MEDIA
The journalism program at Boys State is comprised of three media outlets: KMBS-TV, KMBS Radio and the MBS Record newspaper. The citizens get the unique experience of reporting and broadcasting the news of the model state utilizing the up-to-date equipment found on campus of Lindenwood University. Daily planning meetings, interviewing and even advertising makes the role of media in democracy as realistic as it can be.
