Sunday is the first full day of Missouri Boys State. Citizens begin to shape their week by establishing the first level of their State by electing their city officials. Elections start bright and early at 6 AM, and the evening colors wraps up at 10 PM with a whirlwind of activity in between.
MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS TODAY
Every city assembled to decide who would lead them throughout the week. That’s right, in less than 24 hours, the citizens of Boys State have selected their first level of leadership. These young men have the noble job of guiding their cities throughout the week. They have already gotten busy by making appointments and starting to draft policies. The work that they do right now lays the foundation of what will make their state successful. Check out the election results here.
FIRST ALL PARTY MEETING
Both of Boys State’s two political parties, the Federalists and the Nationalists, had full member sessions today. The parties discussed potential platforms to run on and ways that they can distinguish themselves. Several citizens were also elected to serve as the leaders within the political parties, with a party chair and committeeman chosen. While governmental jobs, such as Mayor, give the city a structure to prosper; the political parties give the citizens a platform to decide what values they want to stand by.
SCHOOLS OF INSTRUCTION
Citizens made one of the most important decisions of their week after lunch. Which of the nine schools of instruction were they going to attend this week. Citizens chose from: Campaigning & Political Operations, Commerce, Education, International Affairs, Journalism & Media, Law, Law Enforcement & Public Safety, Legislative & Executive Policy, and Local Government & Policy School. Citizens can look forward to learning from real experts in the fields they choose.
SENATORIAL SPEAKERS
Today's speaker, Sarah Hurwitz, was Michelle Obama's Chief Speech Writer and Barack's Senior Writer. Boys State citizens were engaged as Sarah addressed Michelle's 2008 Democratic National Convention speech and spoke about how determination in the face of failure inevitably leads to success.
